Mr. Jan Stiff is an internationally recognized, award winning photographer and digital artist living in California whose works have been shown both nationwide and abroad. Mr. Stiff was recently a recipient of a Silver Medal at the 2007 Venice International Photo Contest in Italy. He was also one of the top-ten finalists in the science category at the Sony World Photography Awards in Cannes, France.
Mr. Stiff has been involved in art for over 30 years. He has been both a painter and a photographer. His oils and watercolors were receiving both amateur and professional recognition in the 1970’s when he was still in college. Later his interests turned to photography where he gathered freelance experience in wedding & portrait photography, documentary photography, and scenic photography.
Upon completion of a 30-year engineering career, with over 10 of those spent researching the uses of digital imagery, Mr. Stiff turned his efforts to building a professional career in photography and digital art. With that aim in mind, he founded J. Sterling Photography, a firm dedicated to the production and sale of fine art photography and digital art.
Although producing images in a wide variety of styles and subject matter, one of Mr. Stiff’s signature styles combines astrophotography with terrestrial subjects to create what he calls “Spacescapes”. These images range from pure fantasy to subtle combinations which can sometimes almost fool the viewer into believing that he is looking an actual scene captured through the lens of a camera. Mr. Stiff’s “Spacescapes” have received recognition and awards in a number of international competitions, and have been chosen for publication in a nationally recognized magazine.
